UP IN THE VALLEY 2015 – 3>6 august – Presegno, Italy

upinthevalley

INTRO
Up In The Valley is a sound workshop that takes place in a mountain setting. The workshop explores the physical nature of sound and the concept of listening-as-intervention.

White noise and sound impulses are the tools that participants use to generate sound and activate the acoustic of the space.

All the exercises are body-based and run under a semi-structured improvisation frame that refers to the notions of presence, duration, and intersubjectivity.

The detailed program for each day (start time, sort of activities, lunch time, end) is defined day by day together with the participants.

CONTENT
The mountain setting provides specific qualities such as:
- high silence/noise ratio
- long-distance acoustic horizon and
- irregular reflecting faces, obstacles and boundaries.
With these properties in mind, a set of ad-hoc-exercises is designed and presented to the participants.

Basic acoustic principles and sound effects such as:
- propagation in the open field
- reflection
- absorption and
- filtering
are staged, practiced, and performed live.

The intention is to:
- observe how sound interacts with the setting and
- physically interfere with the behaviour of sound in space.

Focussing on:
- the position of the listener
- the distance from the sound source and
- the threshold of audibilty
the workshop investigates the potential of the listener to use his/her own body to modify the propagation and reception of sound.

The City Is On Fire

the city is on fire

WE PROVOKE THE CITY AND LISTEN TO ITS RESPONSE
EACH EXPLOSION LEADS TO A CONFLICT
EACH EXPLOSION LEADS TO AN ENCOUNTER
EACH EXPLOSION LEADS TO A DIALOGUE
SET THE FUSE ON FIRE AND GET READY FOR CONFRONTATION

1) The group walks in the city at night-time looking for places where to burst firecrackers.
2) The group moves silently, like in a sabotage action.
3) Once the firecracker is set off, the group concentrates on the impact of the bang.

A Balloon For Linz

A Balloon for Linz brings to light the acoustic response of specific locations in Linz. Together with the video, a series of exploratory walks were organized in the city of Linz. Participants were invited to pop balloons and listen to the acoustic architecture of the urban space.
The project received an honorary mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2011.
